Hypertension

What is hypertension?

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a common long-term medical condition in which the pressure of blood pumped from the heart against artery walls is persistently elevated.  High blood pressure generally develops over many years, and often occurs without any symptoms. If left untreated, hypertension can lead to heart and vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and stroke. Therefore, it is very important for patients to have their blood pressure monitored and controlled.

Nephrologists are experts at the diagnosis and management of hypertension. At Nephrology & Hypertension Associates of NJ, we specialize in prescribing the best treatment options that are individualized for each patient.

What causes hypertension?

Kidney Disease is one of the leading causes of high blood pressure. However, hypertension can happen on its own, and generally develops over a long period of time, rarely accompanied with symptoms. In some cases, people may experience headaches, shortness of breath, nosebleeds, lightheadedness, or dizziness. Even without symptoms, damage to blood vessels and the heart can be detected. Many risk factors, such as age, ethnicity, size/weight, alcohol/tobacco use, gender, and existing health conditions can increase the chances of having hypertension. However, it is treatable by a medical professional, and treatments do not always require medication.

What can be done to treat hypertension?

It is very important for patients to have their blood pressure monitored and controlled. Lifestyle changes are the standard initial treatment for hypertension. These changes include weight loss, physical exercise, stress reduction, and eating a healthier, low sodium diet.  If left untreated, hypertension can lead to heart and vascular disease, chronic kidney disease, and stroke.
